It's been a while...

Wow, um, yeah, I totally skipped January. My bad. The beginning of the new year has been kind of crazy. I have all these goals for this year and things I want to improve. My resolutions list is pretty long, maybe too long. But it's doable.

Looking back over last year, I realized that I didn't do much. Nothing major happened and I just kind of floated along in life and didn't accomplish much of anything. But this year will be different. The key will be to not get overwhelmed.

I'll just briefly go over some of my goals:

  1. Improve my spirituality. This includes going to church every week (I get lazy, a lot) and doing the daily stuff of reading my scriptures and saying prayer. I've struggled with that one for a while.
  2. Make and keep to a budget. Another thing we've been meaning to do for a while, but just keep skipping over. But this year we're going to start knocking out some debt.
  3. More discipline and structure for the kids. Jacob is totally passed the do whatever he wants all day stage and I need to get William ready for preschool.
  4. Health stuff. Daniel and I are going to start working out regularly and I'm trying to do more good home cooked meals and less fast food.
  5. And finally, my writing goals. Which include, finishing my current project (which might happen this weekend), start a new project and to update my blogs once a week.

It's a lot, but I've got a year, so I think I can do it. Just have to adjust the daily schedule a bit and stop being so lazy. I'm insanely lazy.

Anyway, as I said in #5, I'm going to keep up with my blogs this year *pause for laughter* yeah, yeah, I know. :) But I've got a lot of ideas and stuff.

So what do you have to look forward to? Well, I plan on updating this blog every Friday and the Writing blog on Wednesdays. Some topics we'll cover here are, Kricket Krafts, Kricket Kooks, more Mommy Konfessions, more book reviews and just whatever else I do in my life.

So please, stick around, I want to do more with this blog and I can't do that without your help and support. :)

Happy Valentines Day and have a great weekend!

P.S. I'm going to be doing some adjustments to the blog today, so it might look weird for a bit.

Happy Thanksgiving!

And here follows the obligatory gratitude post. ;)

But seriously, I have a lot to be thankful for. If you're friends with me on Facebook, you'll notice that I don't do the daily gratitude thing in November because, well, why try to do something I know I'll forget to do two days in?

So here follows some things that I am grateful for this year.
  1. My family. Daniel is the most amazing husband and father ever. My boys are gems (most of the time). I'm so lucky that I live near my sisters and that my parents are able to come visit us, as well as being not too terribly far from Daniel's family. Oh, and Happy, I love my dog. :)
  2. My job. I'm so grateful that I get to be a stay at home mom. As hard as it can be sometimes, I love being home with William and Jacob. Also, I love being able to spend a whole day in my PJ's. ;)
  3. Writing. I love to write and create new worlds and characters to populate those worlds. I love coming up with stories. Again, it's not always easy, but it's worth it.
  4. All the material things I take for granted. I live in a nice place. We have a good car. I'm able to buy food, clothes and other, less essential things. I love the internet and the TV. And books, so many books!
  5. My religion. I'm grateful to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints. It gives me peace and direction in my life, as well as connecting me to good people and new friends.
Well, I think that about covers it. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving (if you celebrate it) and try not to over eat.

Oh, a programming note: Starting next week I'm going to start a series of writing tips over at Kricket Writes. I've been thinking about doing this for a while and I finally figured out a plan. So look forward to that. :)

And Happy Thursday! Thanks for reading!

Book Recommendation

I don't feel like doing my usual Krank today since Monday's post was pretty cranky.

So I'm going to throw out some book recommendations.

Do you like YA with awesome female protagonist? Do you like a rich fantasy world full of magic? Do you like knights, mages, gods/goddesses, spies, international politics, mysteries, or crime solving? Then you will like pretty much anything by Tamora Pierce.

I'm a special fan of her Tortall series. I do own every book there is. I'm amazed by her writing skill. She's managed to write 5 different series that all exist in the same world. And each female protagonist is amazing and original.

So lets run down the list of awesome. Let me start by saying that you can pick up any of these series in an order. They do well standing alone, but you get the full effect of awesome if you read it in order.

First there is Alanna and The Lioness Quartet. Alanna is a girl with the Healer's gift, who also wants to be a knight during a time when such things are not allowed. So she must disguise herself as a boy to achieve her dream.

Next is Daine and The Immortals Quartet. Daine is a young woman who has a special gift with animals, looking for a new home while hiding dark secrets about her past.

Third is Kel and The Protector of the Small Quartet. Now that Alanna has paved the way for girls to become knights, Kel is the first girl to openly try for her knighthood.

Fourth is Aly and The Trickster Series. Aly is the only daughter of the famous Alanna. While trying to find her place in the world, Aly gets pulled into the dark underbelly of spy work and international politics.

And finally there is Beka and her series. This series goes back in time a bit to a, many times over, great grandmother of Aly. Beka wants to be a Provost Dog (aka a police officer). She has a special magical Gift that gives her a unique advantage when pursuing murders and other criminals.

Each of these characters and their series are so unique and original. That's what truly amazes me about Pierce. They are all young adult, coming of age stories, showcasing a different part of the rich world of Tortall. I've been a fan since I was a teenager and even now, as I reread these books, they still hold up and capture the same magic for me as an adult.

As a writer, I can only hope that my female characters will come off as amazing as Pierce's. Where each has a unique voice and story to tell.

So hopefully I've given you a good idea of something to read this weekend. Tell if you do or have read these and what you think.

Happy Friday and thanks for reading!

2013 Is Here!

2013 is here and that means it's time to set new goals and see how quickly I forget them. ;P

Last year was a good and stressful year. Jacob was born in April and we moved to our new place in August. We saw a lot of family this year. Both sides came in the spring or summer to see Jacob and then we visited everyone for the holidays.

I'm looking forward to this year in hopes that it will be a quieter and more peaceful kind of year. I know that the world and our country is in some turmoil right now, and it doesn't look like it will get that much better this year, but if I can keep my home and family in a happy place then all is well.

So how am I going to do that? Well I've got 6 things I want to accomplish this year. Some are just for me and some are for my family as a whole, and I really believe I can do it this year. And here they are:

Kricket's 2013 Resolutions

  1. Begin getting out of debt. We're finally in a place this year were we can start saving and getting rid of these credit cards and student loans hanging over our heads. I'm really excited about this.
  2. Create a more structured routine. It's hard to stick to a schedule with kids, especially with a baby, but everyone needs structure and I want to create more of that this year. No more living my days by the seat of my pants, it's too easy to be lazy that way.
  3. Potty train Will. I hope to start that in the next couple weeks. I really want to get Will into preschool this fall and he'll need to be potty trained before that. He's ready, I'm almost ready, Let's Do This!
  4. Go to the temple once a month. Daniel and I have been slacking on this. Having small children is a great excuse not to go as often as we should, but no more! We will schedule this and find someone to watch the kids and all will be well.
  5. Finish first draft of Dragons in Space. I'll talk more about this in my writing blog tomorrow.
  6. Read at least 25 books. I've never kept track of how many books I read but I really should. I figured 25 was a good number to start with. I'll probably read more. I've got three books right now I want to read, just having a hard time deciding which to read first.

And that's it folks! Finances, home life, kids, spirituality, writing, reading, I think I covered all the basics of my life. :)

So what are some of your goals for this new year? Tell me in the comments, this blog isn't just about me you know (okay, stop looking so shocked).

Happy New Year and have a good week!

What I Am Thankful For

So, as most of you know, yesterday was Thanksgiving.  I got to spend it with my sister and some of her in-laws and we had a great time.  But, because we were there most of the day I didn't get to say what I was thankful for, so I'm going to take that opportunity now.

I Am Thankful For...

  • My husband Daniel.  He spoils me rotten and takes such good care of me and Will.  He really is the best husband/father ever.
  • My son William.  He is the joy of my heart.  He is so sweet and funny and he is growing up so fast and gets smarter everyday.  I can't believe he's two years old already.
  • Being pregnant.  I know I complain about it a lot because I've been pretty sick this go around, but over all, I'm excited and happy to bring this new little life into our growing family.  I feel it is an honor, given to us women by our Heavenly Father, to have and bear children.  I am proud and grateful that I can.
  • Our new life here in Colorado.  Daniel has a great job, we live in a decent area and we are in love with our new ward family here.
  • My family.  My siblings both near and far who I can talk to and who I know, despite everything, love me.  And my parents, who did a great job raising me and are always there with advice and laughter.
  • My membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  I'm grateful for the peace that the Gospel gives me and the truth it teaches me.  I know I'm not always a perfect example of my faith, but I do try.
  • Being a stay at home mom.  After having to work for the first year of Will's life, being able to stay home has changed me.  I'm happier and more at peace with my self and I love spending everyday with my Little Man, no matter how many times he makes me watch Cars with him.
  • Being a writer.  I love to create new worlds and characters to populate them and then write fun stories about them.  The act of writing is exciting and frustrating at the same time, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
  • All my friends, both in real life and those I've met on the internet *coughAWcough*.  My life just wouldn't be complete without y'all.  You teach me, keep me grounded and make me laugh.
  • And finally, I'm grateful for all those little things that we take for granted everyday.  Like having a car or electricity, the internet or food on our table.  There are a lot of people either in this country or around the world that don't have these comforts and we must never forget that it is a privilege to have these things, not a right, and we must strive to be worthy of them.
And that's all folks!  Well I guess I could go on and on, but I'm sure you have better things to do right now.  So thank you soooo much for reading and I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and continue to have Happy Holidays this year. :D

Because I'm tired of the last post

Because it's depressing and has a sad title. :)

Not much has been going on. I'm finally out of the first trimester and not feeling sick 24/7. Life is finally settling down into a nice routine that I can handle.

I had some ideas for a nice, long, somewhat controversial post last week, but I decided to scrap it. I've had enough discussions and stuff lately that get my blood pressure up.

But, if the idea of not hearing/reading from me terrifies you (come on, you know it does ;) ). Then go check out my writing blog, Kricket Writes. I'm going to seriously throw my self into NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, click the link to check it out) this year and I'll be posting much more regularly on my writing blog.

That's all for now. Have a good Monday. :)

I'm Home Now!

I am now an official Stay-At-Home-Mom! I quit my job a little over a week ago and I am now home full time. I am so excited about this! Work had gotten pretty miserable the last few months, for a lot of different reasons, and Daniel and I had been looking for a way to get me out of it. I'm not one of those women who has to have a career; I only worked because we needed me too. I was the source of health insurance. But, Daniel was able to get insurance through his work and thus I was able to leave. :D

Honestly, I've only been home a week, and I've done next to nothing the whole time. I watched a lot of movies and shows via Netflix (best thing ever made). And it's been very relaxing. Of course, now that I've gotten most of the laziness out of my system, it's time to get to work. It's kind of odd, trying to figure out how Daniel and I are going to arrange our lives now.

For the past year or more we've been living on survival mode. Our apartment was constantly a mess and we got fast food for dinner most nights. Now I'll be the one responsible for keeping the home clean and making real dinners. This is both good and bad. It's good because this is what I've always wanted. And now I'll have a lot more time to write. But, it's also bad because I've never had to self manage. I've gotten used to just doing what I'm told to do. So you see, it's good but it's very different than what I' used to.

Anyway, I'm really excited about this opportunity that I have now. I'll have more time to keep up with my blogs and get back on to the writing forums that I've missed. And overall, this is the making of a much happier Kristen.

Writing Prompt: Romeo & Juliet

Found this prompt here: http://blog.writersdigest.com/promptly/Writing+Prompt+When+Romeo+And+Juliet+Goes+Wrong.aspx

There are two versions here, the first one was just a cold writing, the second in the revised version.

WRITING PROMPT: Romeo and Juliet, Derailed

You watch the play.

"I don't remember Romeo and Juliet going like this," you whisper to your companion.

500 Words or less.

It’s such a classic play that it’s almost not worth paying the money to see. We all read it in high school and, most likely, you watched the 70’s movie version. I remember my 9th grade English teacher hurrying to cover the screen during the scene where you see just a flash of Juliet’s breast.

But, the tickets where cheap, so my husband and I thought, “Why not?” From the get go, we could tell something was wrong. At Romeo’s first entrance he nearly fell off the stage.

My husband leaned towards me and whispered, “Is he drunk?”

I grinned, “Looks like.”

He chuckled.

As the show went on Romeo seemed to regain his composer. He never stumbled with his feet or his words and I began to be impressed with his performance. Then the dual scene arrived. Again, I noticed that Romeo wasn’t quite right.

He was clenching his fist and you could see the sweat glistening on his fore head. All his lines came out in short, angry burst. All the other actors were watching him with mixtures of fear and concern.

“…And so, good Capulet,--which name I tender as dearly as my own,--be satisfied.” Romeo practically barked.

My husband and I traded askance glances. As Mercuitio and Tybalt began to duel I saw the Romeo looked eager to jump in to the middle. As he leapt into the fray, Romeo pulled out his sword and instead of trying to block Tybalt’s sword from reaching Mercuitio, he swung at Tybalt.

Tybalt leaped back his a shout of surprise, barely blocking Romeo’s wild strike.

"I don't remember Romeo and Juliet going like this," I whispered to my husband.

“Me either,” he replied.

There were whispers all around us as the audience watched Tybalt desperately defend him self. It was only then that I realized that there was a distinct difference between the two swords. Tybalt’s sword was dull silver, like painted wood. But Romeo’s sword was bright and shinny and every time the swords struck a small piece of Tybalt’s sword flew off.

“That’s a real sword!” someone shouted from the audience.

A woman screamed as Romeo slashed down, his sword biting into Tybalt’s right shoulder. I found myself standing with my hands over my mouth before I even knew it.

“Take that you bastard!” Romeo screamed as Tybalt crumpled to the floor. Several men came running from the wings and tackled Romeo to the ground.

As the men wrestled him, trying to keep him still, Romeo just kept screaming, “How dare you! How could you sleep with her! You said you loved me!”

My husband was standing beside me and all we could do was stare at each other. Four men finally managed to drag Romeo off the stage while others ran to help Tybalt. Someone called for a doctor and an older man wearing a green tweed coat came on stage and asked us all to leave, promising in the same breath to refund our tickets.

We all filed out of the theater, every one muttering about the night’s events.

“Well, that was entertaining,” my husband said.

All I could do was laugh.

Normally I wouldn’t bother going to see Romeo and Juliet because everyone has read the script at least once in high school, but, the tickets where cheap, so my husband and I thought, “Why not?” From the get go, we could tell something was wrong. At Romeo’s first entrance he nearly fell off the stage.

My husband leaned towards me and whispered, “Is he drunk?”

Writing Update!

So I've outlined 4 chapters and I started actually writing chapter one. I'm so proud of me! I'm stuck on chapter 5 though.

One of my characters is a detective but I know nothing about real police work. My knowledge of detective work is limited to Law & Order: SVU, Bones, and Castle. Not exactly creditable sources. So if there's anyone who actually knows a cop or detective I can talk to that would be great. Otherwise I might just try to get in touch with my local police department and see if I can talk to someone.

Anyway, getting up at 5am to write every morning has been working pretty well so far. Generally, Will isn't up by then, so I can get a solid hour to write. I wish I had more time, but an hour a day is good for now.

Update and some Life Improvments

So Will is now 6 months old! It's so hard to believe that a year ago I was pregnant and that six months ago William was born. So much has happened in those 6 months. A lot of chaos but it's been worth it.

So we've all been super busy. I work 3 days a week and Daniel has a job that keeps him late everyday, but it's all good. My biggest problem is keeping the apartment clean. It's hard to get much of anything done when I'm taking care of Will. But we try.

So I came up with a new story idea that I'm pretty excited about. It's a totally different genre than I've tried before, but I think it can work. I guess you could label it as a crime/thriller type book. I won't go into the storyline too much here, but I'm almost positive the idea can sell.

Anyway, I've decided that I need to write/work on the story everyday. I need to just get it all out on paper. I need to prove to myself that I can, in fact, write a complete story. It's not right to call myself a writer if I've never actually completed a story. So that's the goal, write everyday and finish the story.

Also, I'll try to update this blog with my progress as much as possible. This way I'll have some accountability. I need something/one other than Daniel to poke me and tell me to write. So if I make it public, then I have to worry about my reputation. :)
